With a lot of teams experiencing hosting issues this past season, this is a really cheap way to get an above average host. Easy to set up even for the tech inferior.
What you need:
- a credit card
- a phone
Cost:
- 10 cents/ hr ( You rack up charges hourly, and are billed at the end of the month from when you sign up )
- 3$ / season
- 10 cents per 1GB of bandwidth used. Hosting a haxball room should use up .1 - .2 GB per hour ( 1-2 cents )

You want an hourly virtual server.
From here, you can tweak various settings regarding the servers performance. If you're using this for hosting your games, here's what you should be using:
1. Location/Data Center:
Dallas is likely closest to the majority of players.
2. Computing Instance:
- 2x2.0 GHZ.
3. Ram:
- 2 GB
4. Operating System:
- Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition (64 bit) ( Unless you're familiar with Linux and want to save 2 cents/hr, this is the easiest option )
After you select these 4 options, you can skip the rest and go down and place your order. Your cost should be 10 cents/hr , maybe 14 if you added extra CPU power. You will not be charged anything immediately, as mentioned above, you'll rack up charges over a month and pay at the end. For the domain names, you can just use something like "Bounce.HaxSB.com", or whatever you want.
You should receive an email letting you know your order was confirmed, followed by one saying it was approved and one with your log-in information. Softlayer may call you to verify some of your details and ask what you're using the cloud for, just say gaming. You'll need that for the next part. Your server will be then provisioned. This can take up to 30 minutes, so if you're using this for game days - I'd order your server around an hour - 45 mins before games if you're able to.
Once you have your info, log in at control.softlayer.com/
Connecting to your cloud:
- Click devices -> Device list.
- You should see your server there - it may be still provisioning; hover over the status symbol next to it to check. Once it is ready, click on it.
- Open Remote Desktop Connection on your PC ( I believe MACs have a downloadable Microsoft app for this as well
- Go back to softlayer and copy the public IP address - enter this in the "computer" field on RDC.
- Your username and password for RDC are listed on the softlayer device. Username should be "Administrator" with a random password like TbRkU88.
Once connected, you can minimize the virtual server setup page to see the desktop. Boot up internet explorer and click Tools - Internet Options - Security. Drop your security slider to the lowest point. Now use IE to download Google Chrome, which has flash built in.
Host your haxball room from here, minimize RDC to give yourself admin from your regular PC, then you can go back and close RDC.
Once you're done with the cloud, go back to your control panel for softlayer. Click device list, then at the far right click on your options for your device and click "Cancel Server". Make sure you're cancelling it altogether, not just powering it off. You will get billed hourly as long as the instance is created - only once it is cancelled will you stop being billed.
